OVERVIEW

The Tosio Kato Fellowship aims to reward young promising mathematicians from Southeast Asia in the hope that they will become a driving force for mathematics in the region through a one-year research stay at a Japanese university or research institute. This program is funded by a bequest of the late Professor Tosio Kato and run with help of the Southeast Asian Mathematical Society (SEAMS).

ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS

  • An applicant must have a nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.
  • An applicant must be a resident in one of the member countries of SEAMS. This means that an applicant is eligible to apply if the person is temporarily staying in a non-member country for research activities for a fixed or limited period.
  • An applicant must be an excellent young researcher in the fields of mathematics and must have held one’s Ph. D. for not more than ten years as of April 1, 2025, that is, received between April 1, 2015 and April 1, 2025.
  • An applicant must show that the applicant has a researcher who will supervise the applicant’s research work when the applicant is chosen for the fellowship (Host Researcher) by submitting Verification Form (Form 1) filled out by the Host Researcher. A Host Researcher must be employed as a full-timer by a university or a research institute in Japan (Host Institution) and be a member of the Mathematical Society of Japan (MSJ).
