Toshiyuki Kobayashi (Professor of The University of Tokyo Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences and Kavli IPMU Principal Investigator) has been selected to join the 2017 class of the Fellows of the American Mathematical Society (AMS).

Via his research on "theory of discontinuous groups", "branching laws of infinite-dimensional representations", and "global analysis on minimal representations", Kobayashi has paved the way for a new theory of global analysis via symmetries, and pioneered revolutionary breakthroughs in mathematics. In awarding him the fellowship, the AMS analyzed Kobayashi's contribution to Structure Theory and Representation Theory of Reduction Lie Groups.
