TAKEUCHI, Kei has become a member of the Japan Academy

Dr. TAKEUCHI, Kei, a professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, was selected as a member of the Japan Academy in December 2012. Dr. Takeuchi has established statistical higher order asymptotic theory as a mathematical foundation of statistics and proposed his original criterion for optimality of maximum likelihood estimates. He developed the method for asymptotic expansion of statistical estimators and performed an enormous amount of theoretical calculation, through which he clarified the meaning and the range of optimality of maximum likelihood estimates in the form of asymptotic efficiency of higher order. He led specialists of statistics in the world by this achievement, which is now widely applied in time series analysis and econometric research.
