Rational curves on algebraic varieties

In this talk, I would like to review my research for which I was awarded the prestigious Kodaira Prize. The algebraic geometry, especially the Minimal Model Program has been developed a great deal and its scope has been expanded by many people for the last 40 years or so. Rather than presenting most developed or mathematically rigorous statements, I would explain the mathematical atmosphere at the time by presenting various episodes.
