Dirichlet forms and symmetric Markov processes

A simple but powerful notion of a Dirichlet form was introduced in 1959. In 1971, I constructed a symmetric Hunt process associated with a regular Dirichlet form. Since then, the research on symmetric Markov processes has developed considerably accompanying Dirichlet forms. Specifically, the notion of a quasi-regular Dirichlet form introduced in 1991 and the method of its transfer to a regular one have been effectvely utilized in the study of symmetric Markov processes with quite different kinds of underlying spaces. My talk gives an account on these developments and another one.
